UPI Not working in India

Several users across India have reported facing intermittent disruptions with the Unified Payments Interface (UPI) system today, Saturday, April 12, 2025. Reports circulating on social media and corroborated by some payment service providers indicate that transactions are failing or experiencing significant delays for a section of users.

While the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI), the umbrella organization governing UPI, has yet to issue an official comprehensive statement, individual banks and third-party payment applications have acknowledged sporadic issues. Some users have taken to platforms like X (formerly Twitter) to express their frustration, citing error messages and unsuccessful transaction attempts across various merchant platforms and peer-to-peer transfers.

“Trying to pay at a local store and my UPI transaction failed multiple times. Thought it was a network issue, but seems like others are facing similar problems,” shared a user from Mumbai. Similar complaints have emerged from various metropolitan and smaller cities, suggesting a potentially widespread, though perhaps not total, outage.

Sources within the banking sector, on condition of anonymity, suggest that the disruptions could be due to temporary technical glitches or maintenance activities occurring at the backend infrastructure level. However, the exact cause and the estimated time for complete resolution remain unclear at this hour.

Impact on Daily Transactions and Businesses

UPI has become the backbone of digital payments in India, facilitating a vast number of daily transactions ranging from small retail purchases to large fund transfers. Any significant disruption to the system can have a cascading effect on businesses and daily commuters who heavily rely on this mode of payment.

Small vendors and shopkeepers, who have increasingly adopted UPI for accepting payments, are particularly vulnerable to such outages. The inability to process digital payments can lead to loss of business, especially during peak hours. Similarly, individuals relying on UPI for everyday transactions, such as paying for transportation or groceries, are facing inconvenience.

Payment Service Providers Respond

Several major payment service providers, including PhonePe and Paytm, have acknowledged the issues faced by some users through their customer support channels. While they have not confirmed a nationwide outage, they have stated that their technical teams are actively investigating the situation and working towards a swift resolution.

“Some users might be experiencing temporary issues with UPI transactions. Our teams are working to resolve this at the earliest. We appreciate your patience,” stated a generic message from a popular payment app’s support handle.

Expert Advice During the Disruption

In light of these intermittent disruptions, financial experts are advising users to:

  • Try alternative payment methods: If UPI is not working, attempt using other available options like net banking, debit/credit cards, or mobile wallets.
  • Check internet connectivity: Ensure that their own internet connection is stable before attributing transaction failures solely to UPI.
  • Wait and retry: If a transaction fails, wait for a few minutes before attempting again, as the issue might be temporary.
  • Contact their bank or payment provider: If persistent issues are encountered, reach out to their respective bank or payment application’s customer support for assistance and updates.

The NPCI is expected to release an official statement soon providing clarity on the situation and the measures being taken to restore seamless UPI services across the country. Users are advised to stay informed through official channels for the latest updates.
