Meta Ray-Ban: Persistent Data Collection Ahead of India Launch

Bhopal, As Meta gears up to launch its Ray-Ban smart glasses in India, a significant update to its privacy policy has triggered a wave of concern among privacy advocates and potential users. The new policy, effective ahead of the anticipated India release, mandates the persistent recording and collection of user data, removing previously available opt-out options. This move has raised questions about the balance between innovative features and user privacy, particularly in a market like India with evolving digital privacy regulations.

Meta Ray-Ban AI

Meta announced in April 2025 that the AI-powered Ray-Ban smart glasses, a collaboration with EssilorLuxottica, would soon be available in India, alongside Mexico and the UAE. These glasses boast an array of features, including hands-free calling, real-time translation across English, French, Italian, and Spanish, and the ability to capture photos and videos. The integration of Meta AI allows users to ask questions, get information, and receive recommendations through voice commands.

However, the updated privacy policy has overshadowed the excitement surrounding the India launch. Meta has informed users that voice recordings generated when interacting with Meta AI will now be stored by default. The previous option to disable this storage has been entirely removed. Users wishing to delete these recordings must now do so manually through the device settings.

Adding to privacy concerns, the “camera use” setting for Meta AI is also now enabled automatically. This means that when users engage with Meta AI, the glasses’ camera can feed visual data to Meta’s AI systems. While Meta claims this data is used to improve its AI and other Meta products, critics worry about the implications of constant visual data collection and its potential use in training AI models using private user moments.

Meta clarifies that standard photos and videos captured by the glasses are stored locally on the user’s device. However, this changes if the media is used with Meta AI or if users enable cloud processing. In such instances, the media can be transmitted to Meta’s servers and utilized for service improvement. Furthermore, any media uploaded to Meta-owned platforms like Instagram will be accessible to Meta for enhancing its services and products.

The impending launch in India, a market with a vast and increasingly tech-savvy population, makes these policy changes particularly noteworthy. While the glasses offer compelling features like seamless connectivity with Instagram, WhatsApp, and Messenger for calls and messages, and integration with music streaming services like Spotify and Apple Music, the privacy implications cannot be ignored.

Legal and technology experts in India are already raising concerns about the potential for misuse of persistently collected data and the lack of a robust data protection framework in the country, despite ongoing efforts towards a comprehensive digital privacy law. The persistent nature of data collection, especially voice and visual information, could lead to debates about surveillance, data security, and user consent.

Users in India considering purchasing these smart glasses are strongly advised to carefully review Meta’s updated privacy policy and understand the extent of data collection involved. While the convenience and innovative features of the Meta Ray-Ban glasses are attractive, users must weigh these benefits against the potential risks to their personal privacy in light of the new data handling practices. The debate surrounding smart eyewear and user privacy is expected to intensify as these devices become more integrated into daily life, and the India launch of the Meta Ray-Ban glasses will undoubtedly be a crucial point in this evolving landscape.
